Flashpoint is an independent, low budget, British art-house thriller. from this, we can tell that the target audience is a British niche audience so it would likely have a limited and targeted release, being shown in smaller art-house cinemas such as Cinema City. Cinema city would be appropriate because they show mainly arthouse, independent and niche films, in comparison to multiplexes such as Vue.
Cinema city
Vue
A quick comparison of the two schedules reveals that Cinema city fits the independent and niche market better, as they show foreign films, more independent films and don't attempt to fall back on gimmicks such as 3D, like Vue do. To finish, Cinema City hold a festival regularly called the Screen Arts Festival, which shows a wide variety of different arts such as dance, opera, theatre but also new and local talent such as myself. The primary Institution that would distribute Flashpoint would likely be Optimum Releasing/Studio Canal. This is because they distribute many art-house independent films and as ours is a low budget, independent and art-house style film, it would fit in to the Studio canal roster well. In addition, Studio Canal have distributed films similar to Flashpoint such as Kill List. Studiocanal says of themselves: A passion for film and commitment to creativity is central to STUDIOCANAL's activity in the UK market together with the desire to work collaboratively with our filmmakers to achieve the best possible results. As our film is a 'creative' and shows a 'passion for film' it would suit this distributor well.
If Flashpoint were to be shown on television, it would most likely be shown on Film4, an offshoot of channel 4. Channel 4 and film 4 are channels dedicated to showing a wide variety of content and as well as funding and producing independent films such as Submarine. In addition, there was an interesting release of the film "A Field In England" (2013) on film4 simultaneous with the online, DVD and theatre release. This creative and interesting release reflects how I would think our film would be released.
Lastly, I believe that Flashpoint would be released online through the 'Mubi' streaming service. Mubi's mission statement is "MUBI is a curated online cinema bringing you cult, classic, independent, and award-winning movies." and I believe that Flashpoint belongs to the independent section of the industry so belongs on this platform. And of course, the opening sequence is available to stream for free at any time from the video sharing site YouTube, the video can be reached here.
I'll assess your questions as soon as I can, could you NUMBER your questions please. Thanks Lars.
ReplyDeleteA proficient response, to strengthen:
ReplyDelete1) Include a little bit of information about Cinema City and Picture House. Include listings for this week and identify any low budget films which are being exhibited. You can also reference forthcoming films. For example from Cinema City website:
......Screen Arts Festival
Picturehouse Cinemas are proud to host a brand new cross-arts initiative, THE SCREEN ARTS FESTIVAL. Showcasing a range of arts content from diverse sources – dance, opera and theatre – the festival will also include a number of films and documentaries in themed strands.
This festival is a fantastic opportunity to link a diverse programme across the arts and celebrate the film and non-film programming at the heart of Picturehouse Cinemas............
This indicates Lars that Picturehouse cinemas promote diverse/new talent. Do a bit of digging around if you have time.
2) Also reference Youtube where your thriller opening can be viewed and any other websites on the internet where new low budged films can be viewed with a potentially large international audience.

ReplyDeleteIndependent low budget British films exhibited at Cinema City:
Shane Meadows films about troubled young people: Dead Man's Shoes (2004 a revenge thriller) This is England 2006; Somers Town (2008)
Also the Australian noir thriller "Animal Kingdom" - central character Josh is about 17 or 18 years old. And the British low budged social realist film "Fish Tank" with the central character a 15 year old female, You could also upload screen shots or film clips/trailers of these films to illustrate your points.
